Education Breaking the cycle of poverty through education in Cambodia
At Enfants de Klang Leu (EKL), we are driven by a fundamental truth: education is the only sustainable way to lift a child out of poverty. Although education is a fundamental right, it remains a fragile privilege for many children. In the underprivileged neighborhoods of Sihanoukville, poverty still forces too many families to take their children out of school or put them to work to survive. The road to schooling is often blocked by financial barriers and social pressure. Our mission is to clear that path.
We are committed to transforming the landscape of education in Cambodia through the children of Klang Leu. We do not just send children to school; we ensure they stay there, learn effectively, and graduate with the skills needed to build a dignified life.
Although they attend the nearby public school, our beneficiaries face a path fraught with obstacles: overcrowded classrooms, limited class hours, lack of educational resources and support from their families. These major obstacles hinder their learning and increase the risk of them dropping out of school. Our mission is clear: to remove these barriers to ensure inclusive, quality education.
Since 2006 The challenge: ensuring access to education
For many families in Klang Leu, sending a child to school is a significant financial burden. The costs of uniforms, supplies, and supplementary fees often force parents to choose between education and survival. Consequently, dropout rates are high, and many children enter the workforce far too young.
EKL fights to guarantee universal access to education for every child in our care. We bridge the financial gap by covering:
- Essential school supplies: uniforms, bags, shoes, notebooks, writing materials and raincoats.
- Educational resources: textbooks and activity books available at the Centre's library.
- Social support: our teams are in constant dialogue with parents to remove barriers to schooling and involve them in their children's education.

Access is the first step, but quality is the goal. Public schooling in Cambodia often faces challenges such as overcrowding and limited hours. To counter this, EKL has developed comprehensive NGO education programs that supplement the public curriculum and address individual learning gaps. Divided into small groups, students benefit from interactive and playful teaching methods.
Our educational support includes:
- Reinforcement mathematics and Khmer: Many of our children arrive with significant academic delays. We provide daily tutoring, homework support, and targeted exam preparation to master the fundamentals.
- Computer classes taught by specialised teacher to offer better professional opportunities.
- Language learning: We offer English and French classes, opening doors to the tourism industry and higher education opportunities.
- Soft skills development: Beyond textbooks, we teach critical thinking and discipline, preparing youth for the professional world.

Academic guidance Preparing for adult life
Beyond grades, we prepare children to become independent adults. Our goal is to help each teenager maintain an interest in their studies and give meaning to their educational journey. By helping them explore their talents, desires and possibilities, we encourage them to find their path.
For teenagers, the goal is to build a solid life plan. To this end, we have implemented:
- Cultural and educational trips. Introduction to entrepreneurship to stimulate their curiosity.
- Project-based learning (research, execution, reporting) to give meaning to learning.
- Individual interviews to define their aspirations.
- A university list and a directory of job descriptions.
- Support towards vocational or higher education.

Testimonial Lyni's inspiring journey toward her culinary dream
Raised by her grandmother, Lyni joined the EKL Center at the age of six. Despite family pressure to work in a factory after completing middle school, she remained resolute in her determination to continue her education.
Her passion for cooking, which was ignited during a workshop at the Center in 2021, has since become her vocation. With the support of our educational team, she successfully passed the entrance exam for the prestigious Sala Baï hotel school in Siem Reap in August 2024. She is now the first member of her family to attend higher education.
Her journey exemplifies the impact of dedication: a dream can become a project, and a project can become a future.
