An unforgettable trip to Phnom Penh

6 adolescentes cambodgiennes à Phnom Penh

As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting access to culture for teenagers at the EKL Centre, in May we organised the first ever trip to Phnom Penh for six of our teenage girls. This extraordinary adventure marked their first visit to the capital and their first long bus journey from Sihanoukville, a memorable experience for all.

The aim of this trip was to open them up to the world and to culture, while learning about Cambodian history. Although some aspects of this history are sensitive, they provide a better understanding of the country's current economic situation.

The programme included visits to the Night Market, the Royal Palace, the National Museum, S-21 and the Sosoro Museum, as well as a varied culinary experience with a Vietnamese lunch and a Korean barbecue. A visit to the Central Market and a bowling activity rounded off this fun-filled adventure.

The teenage girls played a key role in preparing the trip. Two meetings were organised to discuss the logistics and historical background of Cambodia. They also watched the film Funan to prepare for the visit to the S-21 Museum.

At present, the 6 participants are putting together a scrapbook recounting the various visits and what they learned from them. This project is allowing them to express their creativity while working on their English through writing.

This trip is the first in a series that we will be setting up to continue broadening the horizons of the children at the Centre.
