Child Welfare and Family Support Cambodia Aid for Disadvantaged Families
To ensure sustainable results in our children development programs Cambodia, Enfants de Klang Leu adopts a holistic approach: supporting children also means supporting the families who care for them. Many parents face unstable living conditions, limited access to essential services, and difficulties caused by job loss, illness, or natural disasters. These hardships can quickly place children at risk.
Our on-the-ground approach provides aid for disadvantaged families by stabilizing their environment, restoring balance, and ensuring parents can focus on their children’s education and well-being. By maintaining close relationships with each family, our social workers detect issues early and intervene before they affect the child’s development.
Our approach Choices based on real needs
Through the Family Support Department, we identify disadvantaged children based on rigorous socio-economic criteria established following a social survey. The majority of the children we welcome come from homes affected by chronic unemployment or precarious and unstable employment. Some of them were not attending school before they arrived at the Centre. They were begging or working to support their families. Our teams pay particular attention to children whose families are unable to meet their basic needs.
A child's admission to the Centre is based on a commitment by the parents to have their child participate in the educational and social programmes offered. Once this commitment has been made, our teams regularly and carefully monitor the economic, social and family situation of each child.
The Centre experiences an annual turnover of around 10% of the children it welcomes, due to several factors: family moves, difficulties in complying with the Centre's rules, and sometimes an improvement in the family situation. In addition, some older teenagers and young adults, gaining independence, leave the Centre to start work or pursue vocational and technical studies. These departures allow new children to be welcomed.
Parental Support Empowering Families through Education
Parental support is central to our mission. Even when facing adversity, parents remain the primary agents of their children’s well-being. Our role is to strengthen their capacity and confidence.
Many of the children welcomed by EKL are raised by their grandparents, sometimes in single-parent situations, as their parents are either deceased, absent for long periods of time, or disengaged from their parental role.
A significant number of these children grow up in difficult and unstable family environments. Some are confronted with relatives suffering from addictions, including alcoholism, drug use or gambling addiction. Faced with these vulnerabilities, EKL teams work closely with families, social services and legal actors.
Empowering Families through Education and Social Work
- Home Visits: Our social team regularly visits families to assess their needs, identify risks, and provide personalized family support.
- Empowering Families through Education: We help parents understand the importance of schooling, hygiene, and nutrition, ensuring that good practices learned at the Centre continue at home.
- Autonomy: By caring for the children at the Centre, we enable mothers—often single parents—to find work or pursue training opportunities.
Help for Young Mothers
We provide targeted parental support to young mothers facing hardship by supplying essential items such as baby clothing, powdered milk, and hygiene supplies, and by supporting them in providing care. By strengthening parenting skills, we create a protective environment around the baby. This support enables young mothers to care for their children in the best possible conditions, while offering them the opportunity to work and provide an income for their families.
Emergency Support for Families Cambodia Meeting Essential Needs
Beyond parental support, our association provides practical assistance to ensure decent living conditions, particularly for those living in extreme poverty. We ensure that children receive the same level of care and attention at home as they do at the Centre.
Housing and Safety
In Klang Leu village, many households live in fragile or unsafe homes. We conduct repairs or, when necessary, rebuild houses entirely to offer children a safer and healthier living environment. These interventions play a crucial role in supporting poor families Cambodia.
Food and Clothing
Food Aid: To address malnutrition, we distribute essential food items including rice, vegetables, sugar, and oil to vulnerable households.
Clothing: Quality clothing is distributed to both adults and children, helping meet basic needs with dignity.
Hygiene, Medical, and Dental Care
Our mission extends to ensuring parents have access to medical and dental services. Our team accompanies families during consultations, follow-up visits, and treatment renewals.
Hygiene Kits: We distribute hygiene kits—soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes—several times a year to support struggling families Cambodia and strengthen preventive health practices.
Vegetable garden
At the Centre's grounds, teams have set up a vegetable garden where local fruit and vegetables are grown. These crops enrich the children's daily meals. The use of recycled tyres for growing crops, introduced in 2023, is bearing fruit. Effective on small areas, it facilitates maintenance and crop rotation. The garden already contributes to the supply of fresh produce, with the aim of reducing food costs and supporting the most vulnerable families.
Beyond its role as a source of food, the vegetable garden is an educational space. Children learn to garden, observe nature, adopt ecological practices, and develop their independence and sense of responsibility.
Enhanced support for girls and women Health, rights and independence
We are committed to ensuring a fair balance between girls and boys. Teenage girls, mothers and women receive comprehensive and caring support designed to inform, protect and guide them in their life choices. Thanks to the work of the social team, they have access to reliable information on health, relationships, self-respect and respect for others, specialist consultations and free contraception, if they wish.
EKL defends the fundamental right of every woman to have control over her own body and to make informed and personal choices at every stage of her life, whether in terms of her studies, career or family plans. Our approach aims to prevent situations of vulnerability, reduce the risks associated with hasty or coerced decisions, and create a space of trust in which to build a future in complete freedom.
We encourage young girls to be independent, educated, ambitious and in control of their own future. Through access to education, information and listening, EKL works to ensure that they can grow and become empowered in line with their deepest aspirations.
By promoting their rights, talents and potential, this approach also contributes to strengthening the long-term well-being and stability of families. A free, informed and fulfilled young woman is also a solid pillar for building a more just, sustainable and harmonious future within her community.
Testimonial Rotha, supporting families to build a healthy environment for children
In March 2024, EKL welcomed Rotha, 8 years old, who lives alone with her grandmother Prom Pov, 65, in a modest home in Klang Leu. After losing her parents, Rotha found herself in a particularly vulnerable situation. Prom Pov, despite her age and limited income from selling small items, does everything she can to provide for her granddaughter.
Since joining the Centre, Rotha has blossomed. She receives daily academic support, balanced meals, and participates in sports and creative activities. Our social team regularly visits the family to ensure their well-being and provide essential support: food supplies, hygiene kits, and school materials.
