Health, nutrition & hygiene Strengthening children's well-being in Cambodia
At the heart of its mission, EKL develops essential services that supports well physical growth of the children. We address the fundamental needs of families facing poverty, limited access to healthcare, and unstable living conditions. Many children arrive at EKL with signs of malnutrition, chronic infections, dental issues, …. Our approach focuses on prevention, early intervention, and strengthening long-term health outcomes by implementing health, nutrition and hygiene programs
Health education Prevention through education
EKL regularly raises awareness among children and families about good health practices.
These hygiene and sanitation education sessions enable children and teenagers in Klang Leu to develop useful knowledge, adopt healthy habits and better understand the impact of prevention on their daily well-being.
With the help of volunteers and health professionals, we organise workshops and information sessions on topics such as:
- Personal hygiene,
- Managing common illnesses,
- Balanced nutrition,
- Puberty, physiological changes and sexually transmitted infections.
Access to Healthcare A Foundation for Child Well-being
Access to healthcare Cambodia remains a major challenge for poor families. Medical services often require fees they cannot afford, leading to untreated illnesses and long-term developmental issues. EKL provides vital support by ensuring medical follow-up, emergency referrals, and routine health assessments.
In our infirmary, our local teams, trained in first aid by the Red Cross Cambodia, provide minor care within the limits of established protocols.
Medical and dental care is reinforced through strategic partnerships with local organisations and associations of healthcare professionals, enabling us to remove barriers to healthcare access in Cambodia. For the children we welcome, we provide:
Dental care
Annual teeth cleaning and dental care for all children at the Centre.
Medical care
Medical care and monitoring of chronic conditions.
Preventive care
Vitamin supplements, deworming and other regular preventive care.
Nutrition A Key to Educational Success
Good nutrition is essential for children's proper growth. Many children supported by EKL come from households where meals are irregular, insufficient and lack variety. Through our charity nutrition programs Cambodia, we provide balanced meals every day, designed to support child nutrition Cambodia, with the threefold objective of strengthening their immune systems, preventing deficiencies and ensuring they have the energy they need for the day.
- Nutritious meals (breakfast, lunch and snack): rich in vitamins and protein, prepared with fresh produce.
- Supplements: distribution of vitamins to compensate for deficiencies.
- Hydration: permanent access to drinking water.
Hygiene and Sanitation Essential Habits for Long-Term Health
Strengthening hygiene children Cambodia is a cornerstone of our prevention strategy. Many common illnesses can be avoided through proper daily habits. The EKL Centre's sanitary facilities are available to facilitate the adoption of good hygiene practices. Under the watchful eye of the hygiene caregivers, each child follows a structured routine:
- Washing their feet upon arrival,
- Daily showers,
- Systematic hand washing at every meal,
- Supervised tooth brushing after every meal,
- Access to hygiene kits (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, shower gel and toothbrushes) and clean clothes,
- Anti-lice treatment administered every six months to all children.
Testimonial Overcoming illness to continue learning
P. and T., brother and sister welcomed at the EKL Centre, suffer from a genetic disorder affecting haemoglobin, causing red blood cell dysfunction. Thanks to thorough examinations carried out with the support of the healthcare team, a diagnosis was made, enabling appropriate and regular medical follow-up to be put in place.
Since then, EKL has been providing all the necessary care: periodic blood transfusions, folic acid supplementation and travel to the capital for specialised treatment.
This ongoing medical care has enabled P. and T. to regain their energy, stability and concentration. Now in Year 3 and Kindergarten respectively, their academic progress is genuine, proving that effective medical supervision is essential for learning.
By covering the high costs associated with this chronic condition, EKL significantly eases the burden on their family. This allows their mother to focus on supporting the education of her four children and offering them the best chance of building a more secure academic and personal future.
